Representatives from the National Sheriffs' Association met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
A letter written by the organization thanked Trump for his recent executive orders aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration, according to Politico.
"State and local law enforcement have, in recent years, shouldered much of the burden associated with criminal illegal immigration and the subsequent impact on our communities," the letter read. "As you have recognized, our borders are not secure and we applaud your efforts to address this threat to our public safety."
Trump, who was joined by Vice President Mike Pence, held a "listening session" with the group in the Roosevelt Room.
Among the issues discussed were mental health of inmates in jails and a program that allows the federal government to transfer military supplies to local law enforcement.
The National Sheriffs Association -- which is holding its winter meeting in Washington, D.C. this week -- represents more than 3,000 elected sheriffs across the United States.
