Retired NYPD Officer Dies of 9/11-Related Cancer

Retired NYPD Officer Manny Vargas, who last served with Precinct 49, succumbed to complications from 9/11-realted cancer the morning of Nov. 1 at Calvary Hospital.

A retired New York City police officer died last week following a long battle with an illness contracted following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Officer Manny Vargas, who last served with Precinct 49, succumbed to complications from 9/11-realted cancer the morning of Nov. 1 at Calvary Hospital, according to NYPD officials.

Vargas, was nicknamed "Monsta" by his friends a family for his size and strength.

Funeral Arrangements:

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 8 from 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Ortiz Funeral Home, 4425 Broadway, New York City.

Funeral services will be held Nov. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 1290 St. Nicholas Avenue, New York City.
