CALIFORNIA-Detective Luca Benedetti, of the San Luis Obispo Police Department, died May 10, 2021. Detective Benedetti was killed while executing a search warrant for a series of burglaries. As the officers approached the apartment, they identified themselves and asked to enter the premises. Since they received no response, they entered the residence. The suspect was hiding inside and opened fire as they detectives entered the doorway. Two detectives were struck and the suspect was wounded by return fire. The suspect committed suicide later on.
Detective Benedetti was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He served with the San Luis Obispo Police Department for twelve years and is survived by his wife and children.
