ILLINOIS-Police Officer Chris Oberheim, of the Champaign Police Department, died May 19, 2021 from injuries sustained on duty. Officer Oberheim responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment in the early morning hours. He and another officer arrived on scene and were met by a male subject who was involved in the domestic disturbance. The suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Oberheim and wounding the other officer. The other officer was able to return fire, killing the suspect.
Officer Oberheim served with Champaign PD for thirteen years and had also served the Decatur Police Department. He is survived by his wife and children.
