BALTIMORE --
The Harford County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash in which a deputy was injured by a drunken driver.
The collision happened around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday on Route 40 at Route 152.
Police said the deputy, identified as 26-year-old Brad Sives, was struck by Kevin Johnstone, 21, of Edgewood.
Police said Johnstone was driving too fast and lost control of his car while trying to turn right onto 152, hitting a median, going airborne and hitting the deputy's patrol car.
Police said Sives was trapped for 45 minutes in the car before fire crews could get him out. He was eventually flown to Shock Trauma, where officials said he was treated and released by 7:30 a.m.
Police said Johnstone and a passenger in his car were wearing seat belts and weren't injured.
A preliminary investigation shows that Johnstone was under the influence of alcohol at the time. He was taken into custody and charged with DUI, reckless and negligent driving and failure to control speed.
Officials said Sives is a four-year veteran of the sheriff's office.
The crash investigation caused delays at the start of the morning rush hour.
