CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — An Ontario County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured and hospitalized after a crash on Monday night, the sheriff said.
At 8 p.m. a trooper was attempting to arrest someone on the side of Route 5 in Canandaigua, said Ontario County Sheriff David J. Cirencione in a news release.
The person started to resist arrest and the trooper called for assistance.
The deputy left Hopewell and started to drive to assist the trooper, Cirencione said. As the deputy drove westbound on Route 5, the patrol car collided with an SUV going eastbound on Route 5 just west of Mumby Road, he said. Cirencione said the patrol vehicle was in “emergency mode.”
The deputy had to be freed from their car and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with serious injuries, he said. The deputy had emergency surgery and is in the ICU in stable condition, Cirencione said.
The driver of the SUV was also taken to Strong Memorial Hospital where they are in stable condition with a leg injury, he said.
Cirencione did not give any identifying information about the deputy or the driver of the SUV.
