A pursuit ended with a suspect dead and a Fairfax County police officer in critical condition following a head-on collision early Thursday morning.
The incident became shortly after midnight after police responded to a reported domestic dispute in the 4800 block of Tapestry Drive in Fairfax, according to The Washington Post.
Officials said an officer approached 40-year-old Cicero I. Limberea in front of a home and spoke to him briefly.
Limberea got into an SUV and left the scene; speeding away before turning into oncoming traffic on Little River Turnpike.
Police said the suspect headed in the wrong direction for several miles, nearly hitting several vehicles.
The officer who first spoke to the man began pursuing him while traveling in the correct lane and soon received backup from other officers.
As the suspect crossed an overpass over the Capital Beltway, one of the responding officers collided with him head-on.
Limberea was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 28-year-old officer, whose name has not been released, was trapped inside his cruiser following the crash and had to be extricated.
Officials said he suffered numerous injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
The incident is currently under investigation.
