Bardstown, Kentucky Police Department mourns the loss of Police Officer Jason Ellis.  Officer Ellis was shot and killed on an exit ramp from the Bluegrass Parkway shortly before 2:50 am local time today.

A call into 911 reported that an officer had been fatally struck by a vehicle. A Kentucky State Police trooper responded to the scene and, upon investigation, discovered that Officer Ellis had been shot. Reportedly, Officer Ellis was on his way home after completing his shift and was in uniform driving a marked patrol vehicle. Though no one is certain, it's believed that he may have stopped behind another vehicle on the exit ramp, either to investigate it or to offer assistance, and was ambushed/shot by whomever was with that other vehicle.  Officer Ellis had reportedly not called out and his situation was unknown until a citizen called in to 911.

The subject who shot him remains at large.

Officer Ellis was a 7 year veteran with the Bardstown Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and two sons.
