Ga. Police Officer Dies after Working Out at Department

Columbus Police Officer Richard McMahan, 59, suffered a heart attack while running on the treadmill at the department's gym.

A Georgia police officer died while working out at the department.

Columbus Sgt. Richard McMahan passed away Wednesday at Piedmont Columbus Regional North hospital, according to his obituary. He was 59.

McMahan had suffered a heart attack as he was running on the treadmill in the department's gym, the Officer Down Memorial Page reports. He had been working out as part of the department's wellness program and was getting ready for an annual physical fitness test.

McMahan served with the Columbus Police Department for 40 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

A celebration of life with police honors will be held Thursday.
