A Virginia police officer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic shooting at a store Monday.
The incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. at a gas station and store in Covington when a 42-year-old man got into an altercation with a 64-year-old relative and employee at the store, WSLS-TV reports. The employee was then fatally shot by his relative.
Alleghany County sheriff's deputies and Covington police officers responded to the scene, and they encountered the gunman as he exited the store. Gunfire erupted, killing Covington Police Officer Caleb Ogilvie and the suspect.
Ogilvie, 35, had been with the department since August 2021. He also served as a Marine from 2006 to 2010 and re-enlisted in reserved duty from 2011 to 2016 after being honorably discharged.
“His engaging personality, dedication to serving others and a great sense of humor, quickly endeared him with the Covington Police Department family and our community,” said Chief Christopher Smith. “This is a senseless loss that’s being felt by so many today and will as days come.”
Ogilvie is survived by a wife and two daughters.
