A Texas police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash as he was heading home from work late last month.
The incident happened just before 6 a.m. Sept. 23 as Austin Senior Police Officer Anthony "Tony" Martin was on his way home on his department motorcycle, the agency stated in a news release. When Martin reached an intersection in Liberty Hill, he collided with a vehicle that turned in front of him, KTBC-TV reports.
Martin died at the scene. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
A public visitation and funeral service is set for Monday. It will be followed by a police procession to Abeline, where the officer will be interred.
Martin had been with the Austin Police Department for 16 years, serving in the patrol, DWI and motors units. Before joining the department, he spent 20 years with the Air Force.
Martin is survived by his wife, three children and a granddaughter.
Austin Cops for Charities has started a fundraising campaign for Martin's family.
