Slain Nev. Police Officer Identified: 'More than a Colleague'
The North Las Vegas Police Department has identified an officer killed in a shootout on Tuesday as 46-year-old Jason Roscow.
Roscow had been with the department for 17 years, starring in June 2007. He worked in the traffic division starting in February 2013 before returning to patrol operations last February, officials said.
"Officer Roscow was more than a colleague," the department said in a statement. "He was a friend, a mentor and a valued member of our law enforcement family. His sacrifice will never be forgotten and his legacy of service and bravery will continue to inspire us all."
The deadly shooting occurred after officers responded about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a man pointing a gun at another person in the area of Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road, police said.
As officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with the man, but he ignored their commands and fled, police said.
Roscow located the man and ordered him to show his hands, police said. He ignored the officers's commands, and they exchanged gunfire, police said.
Both were wounded; the officer hit by multiple shots, police said.
Roscow and the other man were taken to University Medical Center, where they were both pronounced dead, police said.
"Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer's family, friends and his brotherhood in blue," Police Chief Jacqueline Gravatt said in a statement.
A procession in honor of Roscow was scheduled for 4 p.m. today from the Clark County Coroner's Office, 1704 Pinto Lane, to Palm Downtown Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St.
The department said it was working with Roscow's family to provide support.
The public can make donations to the family through an official account established for their benefit, police said.
The account has been set up through the Injured Police Officers Fund at Lexicon Bank, under account number 1000010630, police said.
