N.C. Deputy Dies after Being Found Unresponsive at School

Iredell County Sheriff's Deputy Marty Joe Lewis suffered a medical emergency at a Statesville elementary school where he worked as a school resource officer.

An Iredell County sheriff’s deputy died at a hospital Friday after having a medical emergency at a Statesville elementary school, officials said.

Marty Joe Lewis was on duty as the school resource officer at Scotts Elementary School when he was found unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said. School officials called 9-1-1.

School staff, firefighters and paramedics performed CPR on Lewis, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital on Friday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lewis was a 20-year veteran of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

“Deputy Lewis was dedicated to, and loved working with the staff and students at Scotts Elementary School,” the sheriff’s office said.
