An Arkansas police officer was fatally shot by a suspect who was killed in a shootout during a standoff that left a state trooper wounded Thursday.
The incident began at around 11 p.m. Wednesday when Stuttgart Police Sgt. Donald Scoby, 45, tried to pull over a car driven by Jacob Cole Barnes, 31, Arkansas State Police said in a statement. Barnes would not stop, and a chase ensued.
At one point, Barnes abandoned his vehicle and began fleeing pursuit. During the chase, he allegedly shot and killed Scoby.
Barnes eventually came to a home and forced his way inside. A woman also was in the house, and she barricaded herself inside as police reached the scene.
Barnes opened fire during the standoff, wounding a SWAT team member. Police returned fire, killing Barnes.
“Barnes was fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire with SWAT team members," Arkansas State Police said in a statement.
The woman inside the house was rescued by police and uninjured. The wounded SWAT team member suffered a wound that wasn't considered life-threatening.
The Arkansas State Police is leading the investigation into Scoby's shooting.
