Rookie Texas Deputy Killed in Collision with Tractor-Trailer

A rookie Texas deputy on the second day on the job was killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer Tuesday.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the crash involving Deputy Matthew Pierson happened at around 7:30 a.m. at a state highway intersection. Pierson was traveling north in his cruiser when failed to yield for a westbound tractor-trailer, colliding with the trailer.
The driver was uninjured in the crash. The incident is under investigation.
Along with serving as Shelby County sheriff's deputy, Pierson as was a volunteer firefighter and the public information officer with the Etolie Volunteer Fire Department. A statement from the department said Pierson, 25, recently graduated from the police academy and was excited about his new job. He lost his life on his second day with the agency, according to the fire department.
“Matt was all about helping people even if he didn’t know them. He was loved dearly by his fire department family," Etoile Fire Chief David Wheeler said in a statement.
A memorial has been set up at the Shelby County Sheriff's Office for the public to leave condolences.
"Please remember the family of our deputy and our agency in your prayers at this time," the sheriff's office stated.
