NYPD Recruit who Died During Training Honored at Academy Graduation

July 16, 2024
During the NYPD's academy graduation, Mayor Eric Adams hugged and offered his condolences to the family of Edgar Ordonez, a probationary officer who died during a July 8 training drill.

The NYPD recruit who died during training was honored at what would have been his graduation ceremony from the Police Academy on Monday.

Mayor Adams and Police Commission Edward Caban paid their respects to Edgar Ordonez during the ceremony at Madison Square Garden, which the fallen probationary officer’s family attended.

Ordonez, 33, was training at the NYPD’S training center in Rodmans Neck in the Bronx on July 8 when he collapsed around 11:25 a.m., the Daily News previously reported.

The recruit was taking part in an outdoor drill that involved running, stopping and then firing at a stationary target when he got dizzy, police sources said.

High temperatures in Central Park topped out at 95 degrees that day, according to the National Weather Service. It’s believed the extreme heat played a role in his death, according to cop sources.

Over 600 officers graduated from the police academy on Monday, the NYPD said in a social media post later Monday.
