A police officer at Yale University died this week after suffering some kind of a medical issue.
Officer Gregory Swiantek died Wednesday following an unspecified medical event, according to the Yale Police Department.
In a post made on Facebook, police said his death has brought “immense grief” to his fellow officers.
“Officer Swiantek was an extraordinary officer, a devoted father to his beloved daughter, a cherished friend, and a dedicated community member,” police wrote.
According to police, Swiantek joined the university department in October 2007 and served in a number of different roles, including on patrol and as a community engagement officer, field training officer and bicycle officer. He was a “proud member of our Honor Guard and a true pillar of our community,” police wrote.
“Always the first to offer a helping hand, his kindness, compassion, and unwavering support touched countless lives,” the post stated.
Police said Swiantek was always diligent in sending those he loved a text on holidays, birthdays or major life events, “always keeping his friends and family close to his heart.”
“His absence leaves a void that words cannot fill,” the department wrote.
Police have asked the public to keep Swiantek’s 10-year-old daughter Remy, his extended family and friends and the entire law enforcement community “in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Anyone wishing to donate to Swiantek’s family can do so at ourcommunityheros.org.
Information on Swiantek’s services are expected to be shared once they are finalized.
“Rest easy, Officer Swiantek, your legacy of love and service will never be forgotten. We’ve got it from here,” police wrote.
