The Hundred Club of Massachusetts Highlights Benefits for Families of Firefighters and Police Officers in Cases of Non-Line-of-Duty Deaths
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Hundred Club of Massachusetts, Inc. today announced benefits that are available to families of firefighters and police officers in the event of a non-line-of-duty death.
The Club is widely known for providing financial relief and long-term support to the families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty across the Commonwealth, but benefits to spouses and families are not limited only to those facing these circumstances.
The Club also offers a one-time benefit to a surviving spouse and any minor child/children of any active duty police officer or firefighter lost to a non-line-of-duty death in the way of:
- A one-time check for $10,000 to the surviving spouse
- A one-time check for $2,000 to each minor child of the deceased
"Our firefighters put their lives on the line for their communities every day, and this addition to The Hundred Club of Massachusetts' benefits reflects that the risk our first responders face is not limited to when they are on duty," said Joseph Finn, Former Boston Fire Commissioner and Chief of Department, and Hundred Club Director. "I greatly appreciate The Club's recognition of non-line-of-duty deaths and support for the families of our local heroes."
Since 1990, more than 200 Boston firefighters have died of cancer, and every year 20 firefighters are diagnosed with the disease--2.5 times the rate of other Boston residents. Along with the risk of illness, firefighters and police officers alike are five times more likely than civilians to suffer from symptoms of PTS and depression.
"At The Hundred Club of Massachusetts, our promise is to never forget the heroes who have lost their lives, and it is our honor to continue to care for those who have cared for us,” said Peter Smyth, President, The Hundred Club of Massachusetts.
There are over 30,000 first responders in Massachusetts who on a daily basis put their lives in harm’s way. The Hundred Club is committed to offering assistance and support to the families of fallen police officers and firefighters. To learn more about The Hundred Club, visit www.100clubmass.org.
