VOLNEY, NY — The Oswego County deputy killed in a crash in Volney Wednesday morning has been identified.
The deputy killed was Cailee Campbell, 33, said Oswego County Sheriff Don Hilton. She has been a deputy in Oswego for 17 months, he said. She was a patrol officer, he said.
She also worked for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer, according to state payroll records. She was sworn in as a juvenile transport officer in Onondaga County in 2021, according to a Facebook post from the office.
Hilton described Campbell as “fantastic.” She always smiled and “loved the job,” he said. He had spoken with her just the week before, asking if she still enjoyed the job, he said.
Campbell was killed around 6:42 a.m. while on her way to a call in Volney, according to a news release from the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office. The crash happened at the intersection of Route 176 and Rowlee Road, deputies said.
Route 176 and Rowlee Road are both two-lane rural roads. There are stop signs for Rowlee Road at the intersection.
Shortly after asking Campbell for a status check, a 911 dispatcher informed other units that there are reports her car was involved in a crash, according to dispatches from the Oswego County 911 Center.
Several people called 911 to report one car had flipped at the intersection, dispatchers said.
She was trapped in her vehicle, dispatchers said. When emergency crews arrived they requested a “heavy rescue”, dispatchers said. The deputy was extricated in about 15 minutes after the call came in, according to dispatches.
Campbell was taken to Oswego Hospital and pronounced dead, deputies said.
The other driver was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Campbell’s body was taken to the Wallie Howard Forensics Center in Syracuse. First responders lined the bridges over Interstate 81.
She was greeted at the Wallie Howard Forensic Center by local first responders.
The scene was eerily similar to one in April when Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hoosock were taken to the forensic center after being shot and killed in Salina.
