Weekend (March 7-9)

A veteran Los Angeles police officer was killed and a rookie was injured Friday morning when their patrol car was struck by a truck in Beverly Hills.

Officer Nicholas Choung Lee died at the scene while a female officer who joined the force just three months ago was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The U.S. Border Patrol has barred border agents from shooting at moving vehicles or at people throwing rocks.

The decision changes a controversial policy that has contributed to at least 19 deaths since 2010.

Authorities in Mexico killed a cartel kingpin on Sunday who was declared dead following a confrontation with federal police in 2010.

Nazario Moreno Gonzalez died in a shootout with government troops early and officials had something that was missing the first time -- his body.

Police say that Officer Jose Andy Chavez was celebrating his birthday at the Last Call Bar Sunday when Igmidio Mista opened fire after he punched Chavez's wife.

Wednesday (March 12)

Officials said that Troy David Whisnant fatally shot Officer Jason Crisp and K-9 Maros before being killed by responding officers.

A Portland, Ore. police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed in a shootout across from a high school.

The shootout unfolded after Officer John M. Romero, who was assigned as a school resource officer at Wilson High School, responded a call of a suspicious vehicle parked near the school.

One of the main leaders of Mexico's growing "self-defense" groups was detained as a suspect in the weekend killings of two vigilantes.

Hipolito Mora had become the affable public face of the vigilante movement as federal authorities sought to heal a rift between his faction and another group.

On-body cameras have received mostly positive feedback two months into a trial by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officials told the police commission that the roughly 30 officers who volunteered to test the cameras in the field have reported few problems and are embracing the devices.

Thursday (March 13)

Thousands of mourners gathered to remember a fallen Los Angeles police officer killed after his cruiser was struck by a truck.

Officer Nicholas Lee was honored at the emotional ceremony at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and those in attendance said that his legacy would endure through the lives of his wife and daughters and the love he brought to the world.

Police in Howard County, Md. revealed that the teenager who led a deadly January assault at a mall did not know his victims.

Officials said that Darion Marcus Aguilar did not target his victims and planned a killing spree inspired by the 1999 Columbine High School shootings when he opened fire at The Mall in Columbia.

For more than a century, Pittsburgh police officers have had to live within city limits, but an arbitration award may change that.

The award, which has yet to be signed and made official, would allow police officers to live within 25 air miles of downtown.

Friday (March 14)

A dashcam video from a Dec. 8 police pursuit in Pittsburgh shows a man holding an 8-month-old baby girl against his chest with his left hand and a 5-inch knife in his right.

As police closed in, Jared Brown-Garnham began stabbing himself before a state trooper fired one shot into the side of the man's head, killing him.

The Portland Police Department is about to send a new team of police officers out to focus on keeping order on the streets of the city's downtown.

Beginning April 1, the team of nine officers and one sergeant will walk, bike, ride ATVs or patrol in cars as they focus on quality-of-life problems.
