Binghamton Shooting 2009

When an attack is committed by an immigrant at an immigration center, what's the focus? Typically the arguments about gun control and immigration reform need to be set aside so that response protocol and victim care can be focused on appropriately.

On April 3, 2009, the Binghamton Shooting took place at the American Civic Association Immigration Center in Binghamton, NY. The shooting was perpetrated by Jiverly Antares Wong, Wong was a 41-year old naturalized citizen of the US after he immigrated from Vietnam. Wong had been taking English classes at the center from January to March 2009.

At roughly 10:30am Wong barricaded the rear door of the center with a vehicle registered in his father’s name. Wong was said to have been wearing a bullet-resistant vest and was armed with a 9mm Berretta and a .45 caliber Berretta. Wong entered through the front door of the building and began firing at people that were in his path. The first 9-1-1 calls were received at 10:30am and police were dispatched to the center. Wong made his way through the center until he reached a classroom which he entered and fired at the sixteen people and hit thirteen of them. This was specifically the classroom in which Wong had previously taken his English courses. Wong then took dozens of other students hostage. Police arrived at 10:33am at which point Wong committed suicide after he heard the sirens of the cruisers. Police reported the Wong fired 9 rounds in total, 88 from the 9mm and 11 from the .45.
