BOSTON --
A Massachusetts state trooper suffered serious injuries Saturday morning after his cruiser was struck by a woman driving the wrong-way in Boston, police said.
Authorities said Trooper Brian Quigley was traveling northbound on Morrissey Boulevard near Freeport Street at about 12:13 a.m. when he was struck by Cara Dellabarba, 28, of Weymouth.
Police said Quigley was in a semi-marked cruiser and activated all his emergency lights in an attempt to stop Dellabarba’s oncoming Nissan Maxima.
Authorities said Dellabarba drove over the divider island in an attempt to get away, but due to extensive damage to the vehicle's transmission, was forced to stop.
Quigley was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries. He was treated for a lower body injury and released.
Police arrested Dellabarba on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash. She was expected to be arraigned on the charges sometime next week.
The crash is the 45th involving a state trooper since the start of 2010. It was the second one in a week, police said.
“It's more than frustrating, we just keep saying ‘what more can we do,’” said Mass. State Trooper Marian McGovern. “We meet with our legislators, we meet with the registry of motor vehicles, we meet with the people in the court system to work collectively as a team so that we’re all working for one common goal and it keeps happening.”
