MADISON, Wis.
A 61-year-old McFarland man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Thursday morning after he crashed into a Madison police detective's unmarked squad car and a UPS truck, Madison police said.
Witnesses told police the intoxicated man got off the West Beltline and was trying to drive north on Highway 51 when his car jumped a median on Highway 51 south of East Broadway about 11:40 a.m.
The Madison police detective, who was stopped at a red light on the other side of the median, saw the situation developing and pulled her squad ahead slightly to avoid a direct T-bone hit. Nevertheless, the vehicle struck the back rear passenger's side of her squad car, sending it spinning, police said.
Police said the suspect then drove into the UPS truck. The UPS driver was not injured.
Police said the intoxicated driver was checked by paramedics at the scene but did not need to be transported to a hospital. The detective was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Police said Michael L. Valdovinos was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and failure to keep a vehicle under control.
