LAKE ALFRED -- When 64-year-old Barbara Scott walked into the Lake Alfred Police Department on Monday evening, she had a confession to make: Her husband was buried in the herb garden in the back yard of the house they shared at 200 S. Goodman Ave.
On Tuesday morning, police officers and Polk County Sheriff's deputies found what they think are the remains of 78-year-old Benny Scott buried 3 feet down, the Lakeland Ledger reports. They have not officially confirmed the identity of the body. And they have not established the cause of death, although Barbara Scott said he died of natural causes in January and a neighbor said Benny Scott had heart trouble.
Both Capt. Jim Elensky of the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Lake Alfred Police Chief Art Bodenheimer said it was an unusual case.
Scott has not explained why she did not report her husband's death nor why she buried him in the backyard.
