A West Virginia state trooper was shot by a suspect whom he was interviewing in Elkins Thursday afternoon. The suspect was later shot and killed by police in an exchange of gunfire.
According to a news report from the Charleston Daily Mail newspaper, Cpl. Andrew Loudin with the Crimes Against Children Unit was shot by a man with a small caliber weapon that fired twice striking the officer. The officer underwent emergency surgery and had reportedly made it through but his condition was not known, according to the newspaper.
The Elkins High School, near the initial 4 p.m. shooting, was placed on lockdown as a precaution, the paper reported.
The suspect, William David Dumire, 55, of Harrison Avenue in Elkins allegedly carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene traveling to the area of Kelly Mountain Lodge off U.S. 32 with the driver still in the vehicle. According to the newspaper, the driver was unharmed.
Dumire later engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the troopers and was shot dead in a drain culvert, the newspaper reported.
Loudin has been with the West Virginia State Police for 10 years. The incident remains under investigation.
