July 16--A speeding car carrying three suspected robbers rolled over into a ditch in far north suburban Antioch, killing one passenger and critically injuring two others, authorities said.

The three were suspected members of a robbery crew believed to be responsible for an Antioch gas station robbery last week, as well as a other robberies in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, according to Antioch authorities. Antioch sits at the Illinois-Wisconsin border.

The deadly rollover occurred late Sunday night when the suspects' silver Chevrolet sedan lost control at Route 83 and Eagles Nest Road near Loon Lake. The sedan, which had been traveling at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour to elude police, crossed a lane of traffic and flipped over in a ditch, Antioch police said in a news release.

One suspect was pronounced dead at the scene while two others were airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where they were listed in critical condition. The name of the suspects were withheld pending notification of family members, authorities said.

At about 9:21 p.m., authorities said the trio entered Bernie's Marathon at 830 Main St. and pepper sprayed the female store clerk, police said. One of the robbers, armed with a silver semiautomatic handgun, held the clerk at gunpoint and demanded cash. The group escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash

Soon after, a marked Antioch police squad car soon began following the silver sedan with its emergency lighting activated, police said. When the suspects' vehicle speed approached 100, Antioch terminated the pursuit and contacted Lake Villa Police via radio of the suspects status.

Afterwards, police located evidence linking the three to the robbery at Bernie's, authorities said.
