A federal fugitive from Washington state was arrested in San Rafael on Monday with a loaded sawed-off shotgun and two ounces of suspected methamphetamine, police said.
Foy James Chandler, 44, is on federal probation following a 92-month prison sentence in Oregon, where he pleaded guilty in 2005 to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm -- a .32-caliber Beretta Tomcat handgun and an Israeli Military Industries Uzi semiautomatic assault weapon.
Under the terms of his federal probation, Chandler, a resident of Vancouver, Wash., was not supposed to leave the court's jurisdiction without the permission of his court or probation officer. He is also barred from possessing guns or drugs.
On Monday, police received an tip that he was in San Rafael. Police contacted Chandler in a motor- home at the San Rafael Yacht Harbor at 557 East Francisco Blvd.
At first, Chandler lied about his identity, but then admitted he was on parole, said San Rafael police Sgt. Scott Eberle. Police then found Chandler's Washington identification card and discovered he was a wanted fugitive who had been "on the run" from the U.S. marshals since early this month.
Officers searched Chandler and found a small amount of suspected meth in his pants. A search of the motorhome turned up the loaded shotgun, the two ounces of meth and evidence of drug sales, Eberle said.
The estimated street value of the meth is $7,500.
Chandler was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of drug and weapons violation as well as the no-bail federal hold.
