Accused Gunman Faces Capital Murder Charge in Ark. Jail Officer's Killing

Investigators are trying to determine how a suspect was able to smuggle a gun into a Perryville jail during booking and fatally shoot Perry County Sheriff's Detention Officer Jeremiah Story.

Capital murder charges have been filed against a man accused of fatally shooting an Arkansas corrections officer while being booked int jail Wednesday.

The Arkansas State Police's Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident at the Perry County Jail in Perryville, the Arkansas Department of Public Safety said in a statement Thursday. Perry County Sheriff's Detention Officer Jeremiah Story was allegedly shot and killed by Roderick Deshawn Lewis after he had been brought in on drug charges.

According to authorities, Story, 21, was shot as he stood inside a jail bathroom while Lewis was changing from civilian to jail-issued clothing. Lewis was disarmed by a bystander, and Story was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Investigators are trying to determine how Lewis was armed while being booked inside the jail. He apparently had the gun when deputies brought him to the facility, authorities said.

Lewis, 37, was transferred to the Faulkner County Detention Center following the shooting.
