A driver attempting to pull off a high-speed stunt in Los Angeles ended up crashing a Tesla into two parked vehicles and several trash cans, according to police and local media reports.
In a video, shared by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division on YouTube, the Tesla can be seen blowing through an intersection and launching into the air. The car can then be heard cascading onto its front wheels and crashing into the cars and trash cans.
According to the video, which appears to have been originally shared on Instagram by a bystander, “everyone is OK.”
Police are now looking for the driver of the rented 2018 Tesla Model S, who abandoned the car and fled the scene, KTLA reported.
Jordan Hook, a resident of the Echo Park neighborhood, told ABC 7 that he came outside that night to discover the abandoned Tesla “smashed into the back” of his car.
“Neighbors immediately started showing me videos of several Teslas that came down the hill following the one that jumped and crashed, and they piled out of that crash,” Hook told the outlet.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on March 19, the LAPD told ABC 7. The department said the driver of the rented Tesla will face hit-and-run charges, and that there’s a $1,000 reward for anyone who provides information about the driver, ABC 7 reported.
Detective Juan Campos told KTLA the incident was a “dangerous stunt” that “never should have been done.”
“I don’t know what they were thinking about,” Campos told the outlet. “It could’ve gotten somebody killed.”
The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
