Watch Ariz. Police Rescue Kidnapping Victim in Violent Shootout
Newly released body camera footage shows a dramatic shootout last month that erupted as Arizona police rescued a kidnapping victim, fatally shooting one suspect and arresting another.
The incident happened Nov. 13 when Scottsdale police officer's in the special assignments unit saw a kidnapping victim and two suspects inside an SUV in a restaurant parking lot, KPHO-TV reports. When one of the suspects went into the restaurant, officers boxed in the suspects' vehicle, leading to the suspect in the SUV to open fire.
Shots shattered the windshield of a police cruiser, and bullets riddled other responding vehicles. Police returned fire, and officers can be heard yelling to each other about locating and rescuing the victim.
One officer was able to reach the victim, who exited the SUV and began running as shoots rang out.
“Thank you guys, thank you so much. Oh my God, thank you, man,” the victim is heard telling one of the officers.
At the same time, the armed suspect, who also was wearing a ballistic vest, continued to fire from the backseat of the SUV. One officer climbed onto the hood of a cruiser with his gun aimed at the suspect, who continued to move and was shot multiple times by another officer.
Life-saving measures were performed on the suspect, but he died at the scene. The second suspect surrendered without incident.
Two officers suffered minor injuries but were not shot. A search of the SUV found another handgun, two magazines taped together and a rifle.
