Watch N.J. Police Officer Carry Man Out of Burning Apartment

June 27, 2024
While responding to an apartment fire, Evesham Police Officer Kevin Long rushed into a smoke-filled unit to rescue a man in a wheelchair trapped inside the burning building.

A New Jersey is being praised for his efforts to save two people—including one person in a wheelchair—from a building fire last week.

The rescue happened when Evesham Police Officer Kevin Long responded to an apartment fire June 16, The Associated Press reports. When he reached the scene, he found two people still inside the building, and the officer's body camera captured his actions.

Long was able to lead a woman out of the apartment, but she told the officer that she couldn't get her husband out of the building. Long entered the smoky structure and found the woman's husband, who could not get out of his wheelchair.

The officer carried the man out of the building and was able to get the two to safety.

The couple were rushed to the hospital, and they're expected to recover from their injuries. Long suffered smoke inhalation, and he was treated at the hospital and released.

“Without hesitation and under extreme hazardous conditions, Officer Long entered the home, navigating through almost zero visibility to affect a rescue of the trapped resident,” the department said in a statement.
