Video: Fla. Sheriff's Officer Wounded in Shootout with Driver in Body Armor
A Florida sheriff's officrer was wounded in the foot when a shootout erupted with a man wearing body armor during a traffic stop earlier this month.
The shooting happened shortly after 9 a.m. March 12 when a Jacksonvill Sheriff's Office Officer A.C. Gaulding tried to pull over a driver in Jacksonville's Osceola Forest neighborhood, WTLV-TV reports. When the vehicle eventually stopped in a home's driveway, the driver—identified as Brandon White—began firing with a handgun.
Gaulding was struck in his foot, but he was able to return fire. White, who was wearing body armor, was struck by the gunfire, and he tried to grab a rifle while trying to exit his car.
Gaulding opened fire again, hitting White. The officer then took cover behind a fence and fired more shots before calling for backup.
More officers reached the scene, and Gaulding and White were both rushed to the hospital, where White later died. White had previous charges, including resisting an officer without violence and discharging a firearm in public.
