Pennsylvania state troopers shot and killed a man on Friday after he crashed a stolen Ohio State Highway patrol car on the Turnpike in western Pennsylvania.

According to state police and multiple media reports, the incident began around 5:30 p.m. when a highway patrol officer responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike, reported WKBN-TV in Youngstown.

A highway patrol officer approached the driver, who had walked away from the accident, but the man began assaulting the officer, who deployed a taser.

However, the man continued to assault the officer before stealing the patrol car and heading east on the Turnpike into Pennsylvania, WKBN reported.

State police said in a news release that troopers began chasing the stolen Ohio patrol car and used “legal intervention to stop the pursuit.”

Photos from Pittsburgh media showed the stolen Ohio patrol car on its roof along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Beaver County.

The news release said troopers approached the crashed car and “an altercation ensued” in which the suspect was killed. No troopers were injured.

WKBN reported that the Ohio patrol officer was treated at a hospital for “minor injuries” and released.

Several troopers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, said Pennsylvania State Police, who told PennLive Monday morning that the suspect’s identity will not be released until notifications are made.
