A Boulder County jail deputy lost part of a finger Saturday after sheriff's officials said a belligerent inmate kicked a metal door closed while her hand was on the doorjamb.
According to sheriff's Sgt. Clay Leak, Crystal M. Baucom, a 23-year-old inmate, became combative while taking a shower, and "forcefully kicked" a metal jail door closed on a female deputy, whose name has not been released.
"The jail deputy's hand was on the doorjamb at the time," a news release from the sheriff's office reads. "When the door slammed closed, it completely severed the last digit of the deputy's ring finger at the base of the fingernail."
The deputy was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, but doctors were unable to re-attach the amputated portion of her finger.
Baucom already was in custody on five different charges, including first-degree assault and violation of a restraining order. She was rearrested one week ago for assaulting a different jail deputy.
Following Saturday's incident, Baucom faces a new charage of assault in the first degree against a peace officer, a Class 3 felony.
