A Mississippi Highway Patrol involved in two separate crashes Sunday remains in critical condition.

Trooper Mitchell Chappell was responding to an earlier wreck near Bogue Chitto when his vehicle hydroplaned and left the road, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

A search was launched for the 27-year-old after dispatch lost contact contact with him and one trooper was able to locate him and attempted to take him to the hospital.

On the way to the hospital, the trooper's vehicle was involved in a weather-related wreck on U.S. 84 near U.S. 51. A third trooper responding to help also wrecked on U.S. 84 near Jackson Liberty Road.

Chappell was listed in critical but stable condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The other two troopers were uninjured.

Mississippi Highway Patrol's Brookhaven district spokesman Cpl. Brandon Fortenberry said that Chappell has been out of the academy for about a year.

"He's a strong person and a hard worker on the road who would do anything for you," he said. "That's why we're trying to do anything and everything for his family."

A GoFundMe.com account has been set up to help the trooper's family with expenses.
