Oscoda County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Blair jumped into the AuSable River near the Milo Hydro Dam and swam upstream to help bring a drowning 17-year-old boy to shore.

OSCODA COUNTY, MI — A 17-year-old Detroit teen was rescued last week from the AuSable River after he appeared to be drowning. The Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office received a call Thursday around 4:30 p.m. for a report of someone in the river who was struggling to stay above water.

Deputy Ryan Blair arrived on the scene within minutes and found the teen in the river near the Mio Hydro Dam. Blair tried to help the teen from the shore, but the 17-year-old was too fatigued and was unable to grab onto the rescue disc.

Blair then got into the river, swimming upstream to the teen who had gone underwater several times at that point, but was still able to resurface. Once Blair got to the teen, a struggle ensued and both ended up going under before eventually resurfacing again.

A good Samaritan — describef only as a Mio man — and two Tri-Town Fireman were able to help Blair get the boy back to shore and perform first aid on him. Both the teen and Blair were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but were released that evening.
