Sgt. Timothy Kirchner, a reserve Burlington police officer, was working a construction detail when an SUV jumped a curb and struck him, launching him into the air and onto the vehicle.

A Burlington police officer was seriously injured Wednesday morning when an SUV hit him while he was working a construction detail, according to police.

Sgt. Timothy Kirchner, who has been a reserve Burlington police officer since his retirement in June, was working an Eversource work site detail at 34 Cambridge St. when a Chevrolet Equinox suddenly jumped the curb and hit him around 11:45 a.m., the police department said in a press release. The collision threw Kirchner into the air, and he landed on the SUV.

A second officer at the scene helped the driver — an unnamed 75-year-old Reading man — stop the SUV before aiding Kirchner, police said. Paramedics treated the retired sergeant for serious arm and leg injuries at the scene before taking him to Lahey Hospital by ambulance.

Authorities’ initial investigation indicates that the driver was trying to park when he hit the gas pedal, police said. He stayed at the scene and was cooperative with law enforcement.

State and local police are investigating the crash. No further information has been released.
