Ill. Police Officer, K-9 Wounded in Shootout with Suspect

An Alton police officer was hospitalized and a department K-9 suffered "critical injuries" in an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect, who was fatally shot in the gun battle.

One suspect was killed in a shootout with Alton police officers early Thursday and an officer and a police dog were injured by gunfire, Illinois State Police said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced deceased there, according to a news release from Illinois State Police, which is handling the investigation as requested by the Alton Police Department.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital but the officer's medical condition was not released.

The police dog was taken to a veterinary hospital with "critical injuries," according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Alton police officers "engaged in gunfire with a suspect" in the 700 block of East Sixth Street, according to the news release.

The news release doesn't describe what happened prior to the shootout.

Alton requested assistance from state police at about 6:05 a.m.

Illinois State Police will investigate the "use of force portion" of this incident and turn over its findings to the Madison County State's Attorney's Office, according to the news release.
