Cuffed Suspect Nabbed 2nd Time after He Flees Va. Deputy, Steals Truck

Sept. 12, 2024
A handcuffed man wanted on a felony charge ran from a Caroline County sheriff's deputy, broke into a home and stole a truck before he was apprehended again.

A Milford man who police said broke into a home and stole a truck and money after fleeing from a deputy while handcuffed early Thursday afternoon was apprehended a second time late that night in Richmond, police said.

Caroline Sheriff Scott Moser said a deputy went to the area of Sparta and Cecil roads about 12:45 p.m. in response to a call from the suspect, who said he needed help. The deputy later placed the suspect in handcuffs after realizing that he was wanted on a felony grand larceny charge.

Moser said the suspect appeared to be cooperating when he suddenly sprinted away through the woods with his hands cuffed behind his back. He eluded the deputy and a subsequent manhunt.

While police were searching for the man, 26-year-old David Gillikin Jr., he allegedly broke into a home in the Sparta area and stole the victim's truck and a significant amount of money. By then he had somehow gotten out of the handcuffs and drove the truck to the Richmond area. The burglary victim was at work when the break-in took place.

Moser said Virginia State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service joined Caroline investigators in the search and Gillikin was found in Richmond shortly before midnight. He was additionally charged with burglary, a second grand larceny, misdemeanor larceny and obstruction of justice. He was placed in the Pamunkey Regional Jail under no bond.
