'Hero Dog' Leads Wash. Deputy to Injured 84-Year-Old Man in Cabin

When a Stevens County sheriff's deputy spotted a dog sitting in a rural road, the animal led the deputy down an unmarked road to a cabin where the dog's owner had fallen.

A dog turned into a hero when she led a deputy to her injured 84-year-old owner in Washington.

The animal was spotted Sept. 25 sitting in a roadway in a rural wooded area, the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

A deputy got out of his vehicle to investigate.

He tried to lure the dog into his vehicle, but the animal wouldn’t budge, so he drove around the area and tried to find her owner.

With no luck, he returned to the area and saw the dog lying in the middle of the street, deputies said.

The deputy tried to get the dog out of the road once more. This time, the animal got up and started walking toward an unmarked road, deputies said.

He followed the animal and saw an 84-year-old man lying on the ground near a small summer cabin, authorities said.

The man had fallen, injured his leg and couldn’t get up. He had been stuck on the ground for hours, the sheriff’s office said.

His 13-year-old rescue dog, Gita, went to find help, becoming a “hero dog.”

“We credit Gita for saving his life that day. The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us,” deputies said in the Facebook post.

“Thank you, Deputy Wright, for going to the extra effort and thank you Gita for being a good girl and true hero!” authorities said.

Stevens County is in northeastern Washington.
