An 18-year-old driver allegedly involved in illegal street racing is accused of driving over the foot of a Newark police officer while trying to escape authorities.

An 18-year-old was arrested and charged after allegedly driving his car over a Newark police officer’s foot while attempting to flee a drag racing scene, authorities announced Monday.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday when police responded to Frelinghuysen Avenue and Miller Street on reports of erratic drivers.

As officers arrived, people began fleeing the scene on foot and in vehicles, the Newark Public Safety Department reported.

Wyatt Bowden, 18, of Somerville, allegedly drove over an officer’s foot in his attempt to escape, officials said.

He was arrested the same day and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding and possession of a weapon (an automobile), according to police.

The officer was taken to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition, officials said.

Newark police are continuing their investigation to identify additional suspects involved in the alleged illegal street racing.

“This arrest should put daredevil drivers on alert that the streets of Newark are completely off-limits to anyone planning to drag race or showcase their hazardous driving stunts here,” Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said in a statement.

“Sadly, a Newark Police Officer was injured during this incident,” Miranda said. “But innocent pedestrians and other drivers could have been hurt by this group of careless drivers, who also put themselves in danger.”
