ROME, NY — A Rome man drove away from police trying to stop him this weekend, dragging an officer two blocks, according to Rome police.
On Sunday, police were looking for the man, Lindell M. Reed, to check on his welfare. They had received information that he had been using drugs and alcohol for several days without sleeping and was acting extremely erratic.
At around 11:19 p.m. Sunday, Reed drove to the Rome Police Station and began talking with officers. While officers were talking to Reed, they decided he shouldn’t be driving, they said.
Reed was able to get back into his vehicle. Officers attempted to remove Reed and prevent him from driving, but he was able to drive away, police said in a news release.
One officer became caught on the driver’s side door of the vehicle as it drove south on North James Street, police said. The officer was dragged about two blocks while attempting to get the driver to stop the vehicle. Reed made a fast turn throwing the officer from the moving vehicle, police said.
The officer was taken to Rome Health by ambulance with a lower leg injury and other injuries, police said. The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
Reed continued to flee the scene at a high speed, police said. Responding officers observed his excessive speed and erratic driving and decided it wasn’t safe to pursue his vehicle and called off the pursuit.
Reed and his vehicle were located in the area of Beilby Road early Monday morning. At approximately 8:30 a.m., Reed was taken into custody, police said.
Reed was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer. He was held for arraignment in Rome City Court and remanded to Oneida County Jail on $10,000 bail.
