As St. Louis police were deploying spike strips to stop a reckless driver, the suspect's vehicle struck a police SUV as an officer was exiting his cruiser.

ST. LOUIS — A police officer was struck and injured by a fleeing suspect's vehicle early Monday in north St. Louis.

The officer was treated at a hospital and released.

St. Louis police said the officer was injured about 12:40 a.m. Monday near Peck Street and Carter Avenue, in the city's Fairground neighborhood.

Police had spotted several vehicles driving recklessly nearby and tried to stop one of the cars, but it drove away.

At the intersection of Carter and Peck, police put down spike strips to flatten the car's tires. The suspect's vehicle hit a police SUV as the officer was getting out of his patrol car, police said.

After the crash, police arrested one person.

Police announced at about 4 a.m. that the injured officer had been released from the hospital after being treated.

This crash comes two weeks after another St. Louis police officer was critically injured when a car hit him on Interstate 70. That officer, Nathan Spiess, had a leg partially amputated.
