A Houston police officer shot and killed a man after another officer said he was reaching for his gun during an attempted arrest Monday morning in northeast Houston, police said.
The man's name wasn't immediately released. None of the three officers involved in the shooting were injured.
The shooting happened just after 8 a.m. in front of a liquor store near the intersection of Homestead and Bretshire.
Around 7:56 a.m., officers were called to Caddo Road, just east of the shooting scene, to a report of a man slashing tires and breaking car windows, police department executive assistant Chief Alvaro Guzman said during a briefing at the scene.
Three officers responded to the scene and located the man, who began to walk away, Guzman said.
The officers followed the man on foot to the intersection, where they attempted to arrest him. There was a struggle that brought at least one of the officers to the ground, Guzman said. The man straddled the officer during the struggle, and the officer at one point called out that the man was reaching for his holstered gun, Guzman said.
At that point, another officer fired two shots and killed the man, Guzman said. Only one officer at the scene fired their weapon.
The man was declared dead at the scene. As of 10 a.m, his body was still in the street, covered by a white sheet, as investigators collected information at the scene.
The three officers were placed on administrative duty, which is typical following a shooting. Their names weren't immediately released.
