Arrests have been made after a Perth Amboy police officer was shot three times while executing a search warrant on Wednesday night in Rahway, authorities said.

The detective was shot in the leg and was taken to an area hospital to be treated, according to Rahway Mayor Raymond Giacobbe. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said.

Suspects tried to flee when Perth Amboy and Rahway police were executing a search warrant, Giacobbe said. One person opened fire on police, Giacobbe said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the injured officer,” Giacobbe said. “I extend my heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery and offer support to his family during this challenging time.”

ABC7ny.com said the shooting took place at about 8:50 p.m. in the area of Broad Street and Maple Avenue. A witness told the television station two people were taken into custody, including one who was on a stretcher.

“We are counting our blessings this morning that our Perth Amboy Detective is going to recover,” the state Police Benevolent Association said on X, formerly Twitter. “His fellow officers took quick actions to prevent tragedy. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for their excellent care.”

State Attorney General Matt Platkin also issued a statement early Thursday about the officer’s condition.

“All of New Jersey is praying for his recovery as he undergoes treatment at an area hospital, and we are grateful to the many law enforcement officers who responded and rendered aid immediately after the shooting,” Platkin said

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office couldn’t immediately be reached for more information.
