2 Iowa Police Officers Wounded in Shootout with Gunman During Chase

A driver who refused to stop for Des Moines police was fatally shot when he opened fire on officers following a chase that ended when he crashed his vehicle

Two Iowa police officers were shot and wounded early Monday in an exchange of gunfire during a chase that left an armed suspect dead.

The shooting happened at about 1:40 a.m. as Des Moines police tried to stop a vehicle, the department stated in a news release. The vehicle's driver refused to pull over, kicking off a chase.

As the pursuit ensued, the fleeing vehicle left and roadway and crashed. Officers tried to take the suspect into custody, but he began shooting, and police returned fire.

Two officers were wounded in the exchange, and they are expected to recover. The suspect was fatally shot in the incident.

The shooting is under investigation.
