LINCOLN PARK, MIA Lincoln Park police officer and a suspect were hospitalized after a narcotics investigation led to gunfire Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Officers for the Special Investigation Section of the Michigan State Police were requested at the scene in the 26400 block of Outer Drive at 3:50 p.m.

MSP spokesman 1st Lt. Mike Shaw said Lincoln Park police were conducting a narcotics-related "search warrant or some type of investigation" in a neighborhood south of Outer Drive. Some officers were in uniform and others were undercover, he said.

The suspect involved in the investigation saw the uniformed officers and fled on foot, Shaw said, heading north from a residential area into a lawn and parking lot, toward Outer Drive.

"As he ran ... multiple officers and the suspect exchanged fire with each other, resulting in the one officer and the one suspect being struck," Shaw said.

The officer was struck in the lower body, Shaw said, adding he was unsure where the suspect was hit. Both were transported via ambulance to local hospitals. Both were listed in stable condition as of Tuesday evening.

Authorities were still piecing together details Tuesday evening, including how many shots were fired in total. Michigan State Police had deployed a drone to help plot out the crime scene.

"Some of the officers have body cameras and some don't, so this is going to take us a little bit of time to kind of work our way through," Shaw said.

When asked whether the suspect or an officer fired first, Shaw said, "We may never know that." He said the suspect's firearm was located at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of either the injured officer or the injured suspect.

Attempts to reach Lincoln Park Police Department for more information were not successful.

Tyanna Horn, who lives on Outer Drive across the street from where the shooting happened, said she heard gunshots around 2:30 p.m. and looked outside.

She said she saw the suspect running north from a lawn on the south side of Outer Drive, heading toward the street. "Cops tried to tell him to stop running but he didn't stop and they shot him down," Horn said.
