Alabama police officers were attacked during a fight that erupted at a high school track meet last week.
The incident, which was captured on video, happened during the state's high school outdoor track and field championship in Gulf Shores, WALA-TV reports. According to police, complaints were made concerning a man who was acting disorderly.
Officers tried to de-escalate the situation when confronting the suspect but need to deploy a TASER. When that didn't subdue him, the man lunged at an officer, connecting with wild punches.
“(The officers) used a lot of restraint to keep this situation from getting worse than it already was if you see it, it got pretty bad,” Lt. Jason Woodruff told WALA.
During the melee, the man's mother tried to pull officers off her son. Another person in the stands also tried to subdue the man.
Eventually, both the man and his mother were taken into custody. The man is charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest, while his mother was charged with a misdemeanor.
The officers in the fight only suffered minor scratches, police said.
