A Las Vegas Metro police dog is back on duty less than a month after surviving a machete attack.
K-9 Nicky was stabbed by a suspect on Feb. 12 during a 12-hour standoff, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Officials said that 36-year-old Tolavius Timmons swung a machete at Nicky's head, cutting and stabbing the police dog across the face.
Timmons was charged with torturing, injuring or attempting to kill a police animal and torturing or maiming an animal to terrorize or threaten it as well as charges of resisting an officer with a firearm and damaging state property worth up to $5,000, after he allegedly flipped over a police robot that was sent in during the standoff.
Nicky was transported to Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center where he underwent two hours of surgery before three weeks of recovery. Aside from scaring on its face, his handler, Sgt. Eric Kerns, said that nothing has changed.
Nicky did not have to undergo rehabilitative physical therapy and won't have to take any medication for his wounds.
Since returning to duty, Kerns said the two have picked up right where they left off.
"I watch out for him, and he watches out for me," he said.
