Louisiana Sheriff's Deputy Wounded, Gunman Dead Following Six-Hour Manhunt

An East Baton Rouge Sheriff's deputy was wounded and the suspected gunman was shot dead following a manhunt.

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- An East Baton Rouge Sheriff's deputy was wounded and the suspected gunman was shot dead following a manhunt Sunday.

The 6-hour manhunt the suspect, identified as Bernard Ledlow, ended in a deadly confrontation after deputies responded to reporter of an armed man in the woods after a deputy was shot around 7:30 a.m. on Hoo Shoo Too Road, according to a news release.

Officials said that the deputy attempted to stop Ledlow, who appeared to be falling asleep while driving at Airline and Pecue shortly after 7 a.m. The suspect refused to stop and the deputy followed him to Hoo Shoo Too Road. During the pursuit, the suspect fired through his back windshield at the deputy before crashing at the end of Kendalwood Road. The suspect then fled into the woods armed with a rifle.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter at Kendalwood bordered by the Amite River, Ascension Parish and Livingston Parish. Deputies evacuated the few residents living along the border of the perimeter of the sparsely populated area.

Ledlow was shot and killed by deputies following a manhunt that lasted six hours.

The wounded deputy was transported to the hospital and subsequently released with a graze wound.

"He got out of his truck with an assault rifle and engaged with two of our deputies," East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux told reporters. "One of the deputies was struck in his side, and thank God he is OK."
